Mole Removal

Postby holymoley » Tue Jun 30, 2009 5:22 pm

Hi Dr. Lam,

My mom has had her mole removed a few weeks ago [by her house doctor, not a plastic surgeon or dermatologist]. My mom's mole had only grown larger during her life, so it got me thinking about getting the mole removed from my face now rather than later.
My house doctor recommended I have mine removed by a plastic surgeon since it's on my face.
In my country we only have two plastic surgeons, and only one was recommended to me by my home doctor.
I started doing some research online in order to know what to ask my potential surgeon and came across your website which has a lot of useful information [,thanks for that!].
I don't know yet of the plastic surgeon I will be seeing is experienced enough in this type of procedure in order to guarantee the results I'm aiming for [almost unnoticable scar].
I will be meeting him next week and I would like to know if there are any questions with "standard" answers with which I can measure his experience. For example, you mention that for a proper mole removal, the so-called relaxed skin-tension lines should be followed. That seems like a standard procedure that should be followed, so I can ask the surgeon where is the incision going to be?
I have a whole list of questions I will be asking the surgeon.
Do you have any tips on standard procedures that I can use when I'm interviewing the potential plastic surgeon? I would really appreciate any I can get.
If he does not meet my requirements I will have to start searching for a plastic surgeon abroad.

P.s. thanks for having the registration issue solved so quickly :) .

hi,
just review what i stated in my videos. but to be honest, i don't want to make a mountain out of a mole hill so to speak. there are a ton of things that i do that most doctors don't even bother to do and almost definitely your doctor won't do. they include botox pre-treatment to limit stretchback, multi-layer closure (which he probably would and should do) including a suture technique that everts the wound edges so that the skin will not sink down over time, and assiduous after care with KTP or PDL laser and 5-FU injections to manage any thickening. just because i do that does not make that a gold standard but that is also why i try never to do mole removals from outside of dallas. i just care too much in the result where it involves both great removal and great after care. i think the best question to ask is the RSTL's you mentioned. have him draw it out for you and make sure they follow my RSTLs in my drawing, multi-layered closure?, how do you manage scar thickening afterward?. those are some basics.
best,

Hi dr lam,
i have red bumps on my nose which I thought they were acne, but after I saw a dermatologist he said it is angiofibroma. The treatments he has for that are either zapping them with laser or cut them off, but he said that there is possible scaring. I have like 5 or 6 of then not to big but they are bright red which makes them more visible. I was wondering if u offer any treatment for this case? Thank you

if they are just red in color, my laser is very effective. however, 1) they can come back over time. how long? impossible to say, months to years 2) if they are raised, you should ask your dermatologist possibly to burn them off. the one area that burning is a bit dangerous is at the nostril rim. there can be notching if you burn aggressively there. hope that helps.
best,
