Application of paper tapes on incision

Postby sakagemini » Fri Jun 12, 2009 4:33 pm

Hi Dr.Lam,

What is the proper way adhesive paper tapes should be applied on a fresh incision (to prevent heavy scarring / widening)?

After my surgery, my doctor placed the paper tapes in such a way that the length of the tapes runs parallel along the incision. However, from most post-surgery photos I see online, the paper tapes are applied perpendicular to the incision.

Is there a big difference between whether the tapes lie parallel or perpendicular to the incision? And which is the better way to reduce tension on the wound?

first, i would follow your doctor's advice. it is not in my position to contradict his advice to you. second, there are no real studies that i know of that shows a difference between the two methods. i personally prefer to do it perpendicularly.
best,
