Please, please help me!

This section of the forum is dedicated to discussions on managing, treating, and correcting acne scarring. (Of note, Dr. Lam is focused principally on acne scarring rather than on managing the ongoing condition of acne, which a dermatologist would be better equipped to address.)

Please, please help me!

Postby lnguyen24 » Sat May 30, 2009 3:59 pm

Hello, I'm new to this site and would like to share my thoughts and also ask questions like everyone else on here.

I went through a car accident 5 years ago and received two or three (I don't remember exactly) surgeries right after the car accident happened. I have scars on my arm, knee and face--but I'm most concerned with my face, as it affects how I feel. The scars are located on my forehead and the left side of my face. The scars on my forehead altered the way my left eyebrow looks and the scars on my face/near my mouth are raised from healing after the stitches. I also have these lines that are on my cheek and don't know what surgical method would correct them. There's a bump above my left eyebrow and would like my left eyebrow to look even with my right eyebrow.

Unfortunately, I don't have a picture of my scars to show you but if you want I'll be able to. I haven't gotten a consultation and was thinking of going to Vietnam (my home country) to get surgery since the cost is less but I don't know if I trust the surgeons there as much I as I do here in America. I'm a teenager and I just want to look normal. My scars make me feel insecure, even though it's been five years.

My questions are:
1. Have you met anyone with raised scars?
2. What was your way of correcting it?
3. Would dermabrasion be involved?
4. Do you feel like it would be a good idea to go to a foreign country and get surgery?

Please offer me your ideas, opinions, suggestions, advice, anything. Thank you.

My questions are:
1. Have you met anyone with raised scars?
YES, MANY.
2. What was your way of correcting it?
IF THE SCAR IS RAISED DUE TO HYPERTROPHIC OR KELOID (ABNORMAL SCAR RESPONSE), THEN SURGERY WOULD BE THE WRONG MOVE. FIRST, I WOULD START WITH 5-FU AND LASER TO CALM THE AREA DOWN, THE CONSIDER SURGERY. IF THE AREA WAS RAISED DUE TO WHAT IS CALLED A TRAP DOOR DEFORMITY (THE WAY THE SKIN WAS CLOSED AND EVENTUALLY HEALED), THEN SURGERY WITH A CERTAIN TECHNIQUE TO MANAGE THE CONDITION WOULD HELP THE SITUATION. ALL OF THIS IS NEAR IMPOSSIBLE TO DESCRIBE OR EVEN KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT UNTIL A FORMAL SIT DOWN CONSULTATION. SORRY.
3. Would dermabrasion be involved?
NO, NOT FOR THE 2 ITEMS ABOVE. DERMABRASION WILL BLOW UP A KELOID OR HYPERTROPHIC SCAR. IT WILL ONLY HELP AS AN ADDITIONAL TREATMENT WHEN EVERYTHING IS CORRECTED SURGICALLY. THEN DERMABRASION WORKS WELL.
4. Do you feel like it would be a good idea to go to a foreign country and get surgery?
I CANNOT ANSWER THAT QUESTION. THAT IS UP TO YOU.
best,

Thank you so much for your reply! I have googled those conditions to see if they matched my scars but the pictures looked really extreme. I consider my scars to be subtle but I suppose you won't know it until you see it.

I'm thinking of seeing you in the near future! Thank you very much again.
