This section of the forum is dedicated to discussions on managing, treating, and correcting acne scarring. (Of note, Dr. Lam is focused principally on acne scarring rather than on managing the ongoing condition of acne, which a dermatologist would be better equipped to address.)
first of all heard nothing but great things about you. im 48 with rolling and pitted scarring , fat loss around cheek areas and temples.since im coming from 1200 miles how can we plan this with the least visits.
thanks for the kind remarks. as far as the least # of visits are concerned: 1. if you are here just for acne scarring then that is easy. you would schedule with my staff both a consultation and treatment the same day. of course, with silicone, it requires multiple treatments to get the best result in most cases. depending on your severity, that might mean 2 to 5 (in severe cases). 2. if you are needing bigger volumes that are used in conjunction to counteract aging like hollowness around the eyes, cheeks, chin, then fat grafting is more ideal to start with. in that case, i generally like to build the foundation with fat first (although i have put silicone first too) so that i can have a minimum # of silicone treatments. that being said, for a fat transfer that requires pre-planning (deposits, consultation (which we could do by phone if need be), medical clearance, preop phone time, arranging at least an overnight stay, and of course booking in surgical time). if you do fat transfer, i prefer to wait to do silicone for at least a few months to see where things are going.
in summary, with discrete acne scarring, silicone is the way to go. with aging and acne scarring, fat grafting is a preferred baseline then down the road with some silicone. silicone alone we can start the ball rolling with a first treatment on your initial visit. fat grafting requires a bit more pre-planning. hope that is clear. best, sml

hello dr. lam, i am flying in for acne scarring also. i am only 21 years old and I get lost in my own city sometimes (a small town in contrast to the size of dallas). i have a consultation scheduled with you next month but i have to know just a few answers beforehand. a) how much money does it typically cost for one procedure of acne scar correction? also, is the 100 dollar appointment cost not included in this? b)after flying in on the day of the consultation, is it okay to fly back the same day? c) i am starting to grow facial hair and my beard is starting to come in, albeit a little patchy. does silicon stunt or slow down facial hair growth at all? this is kind of a stupid question but I would like to be able to grow a nice beard someday. d) how can i make traveling easier? i am doing this on my own, i have never been out of my home state by myself before and any guidance in pointing me in the right direction (i.e. calling for a taxi to and from your center, etc. ) i would be very appreciative. thanks dr. lam.
