red skin after cauterisation

Postby Nazcanlines » Tue Feb 24, 2009 7:19 am

Hi Dr.Lam,

I have lots of syringomas under my eyes, My dermatologist said he could lightly cauterise them for me, So we went ahead and did one eye region as a test run. The scabs fell off after about ten days and the skin looked great no syringomas no redness just a bit darker. About a week went by and suddenly after a week the skin started going really really red. So i started wearing some coverup to hide the redness while it recovered. After about a week of doing quite a few of the syringomas came back. Its now been about a month and my skin still looks so red, not sunburn red but like a dark deep red/black color. I'm seeing my derm next week but in the mean time i was wondering if you could tell me if you think the resurgence of the syringomas so quickly after cauterisation might have been caused by my wearing coverup while new skin was forming, and is it normal to still have such redness, can i ever expect it to go away?

Thanks Dr. Lam

all of this is conjecture since i cannot dispense direct medical advice. first, you should ask your derm. i can speak in generalities. oftentimes some redness that occurs is due to a normal vascularization process that i tend to cut down with my KTP laser. in most cases even without the laser, it should go down over time. if there is redness that occurs 48 to 72 hours after a topical product of some kind (even one you never had a problem with) and is itchy following a cautery or cutting procedure, then it can reflect an allergic reaction to a certain product. i typically treat that with benadryl but it would have to fit an allergic profile. something that you should speak with your derm about. they know that situation well.
best,
sml
