Double eyelid surgery and scarring

This section of the forum is dedicated to discussions on various surgical techniques for facial rejuvenation, including fat transfer/fat grafting, browlift, blepharoplasty (cosmetic eyelid surgery), facelift, etc. Also, this category includes questions on hand rejuvenation via fat grafting. (Of note, Dr. Lam does not perform body rejuvenation except for hand fat grafting)

Double eyelid surgery and scarring

Postby jdinh92 » Sun Feb 08, 2009 11:57 pm

Hi Dr. Lam,
I've been considering getting double eyelid surgery for a long time, but I'm really hesitant about it because of the possibilty of scarring. I have keloid scars on my ears from piercings, and I've been trying to get rid of them for years. I'm scared that I might get weird scarring on my eyes if I were to get the eyelid surgery. Is there any chance of that happening?

And I was also wondering if you knew of any other ways to treat keloids. I've gotten surgery before to remove them, but that just made them worse (one doctor told me it was because the surgeon used sutures on my ears?). I've also gotten cortisone injections, which reduced their size, but still didn't give me the results I was looking for. One doctor mentioned something about shaving down my keloids?

1. honestly, keloids on the central face are almost impossible to get. they only exist on the neck, ears, and scalp. it is the nature of the skin. now with bad cuts you can have hypertrophic scars but they are not the same as keloids. so honestly i feel VERY comfortable to do your double eyelids given this above fact.
2. i typically used 5-FU injections, KTP laser but to be honest the best solution is cutting it out and timing radiation therapy. shaving it down makes no sense and most likely will blow it larger. go to my video log and watch 2 videos i have on keloids. you can do a search for it on my home page.
best,

Keloid Treatment

Postby mada5659 » Thu Mar 26, 2009 10:42 pm

Dear Dr. Lam:

I have a several keloids around my neck area - they are minor and does not have a big area. I have seen your video on keloid scarring treatments and I am very interested in scheduling an appointment with you - however, I am actually residing in Canada so i would really love to know a few questions before i pay the visit.

With regards to treatment, you claimed that the most effective method of treating keloids is through "surgical excision" alongside with radiation therapy (within 24 hours of the surgery). My question is..
1. Would the keloid completely heal (as in absolutely NO scar remaining/very light blemish) and become flat (given that the treatment was successful). I am still a bit fuzzy about what the word "successful" means since I've read in many articles stating that there is "no effective way to treat keloids up till this day". I would really hope that "successful treatment" of keloid means that it could restore the area back to my original skin color.
2. Under what restrictions would i be prohibited from undergoing radiation therapy? Does the size of the keloid (or age, sex, ethnicity, etc) prohibit me from undergoing radiation therapy?

Thank you soo soo much for your attention..
I am really in desperate need of help..
Thank you.
