Mechanical dermabrasion Or Excision?

This section of the forum is dedicated to discussions on managing, treating, and correcting acne scarring. (Of note, Dr. Lam is focused principally on acne scarring rather than on managing the ongoing condition of acne, which a dermatologist would be better equipped to address.)

Mechanical dermabrasion Or Excision?

Postby MartyMcFly » Sat Jan 10, 2009 12:37 am

Hi Dr. Lam,
Satisfied customer here, I saw good results from silicone micro injection. I have a question for you: I previously attempted to apply TCA cross on 2 scarred pores over 3 years ago by myself, and unfortunately screwed up. Too make a long story short the TCA left 2 chicken pock like scars that are still red with what looks like burnt tissue on the inside. The scars are fairly small but the depth and texture of the scars effect me.

I was curious if this sounds like an ideal area for mechanical dermabrasion? I was even thinking about going as far as having them excised. I can send you pics if need be. Thanks.

generally, you can't dermabrade that because the abnormal skin is all the way deep. if it is raised, 5-fu can help manage it. if it is red, then KTP laser can help. if the texture is abnormal, then cutting it out is the answer. however, my fear is that i don't let the "punishment fit the crime". in other words, i could leave a small scar there that would take a long time to heal. at that point if the scar were visible, then dermabrasion makes sense. hope that helps.
best,
sml
