TCA CROSS - worth the risks?

This section of the forum is dedicated to discussions on managing, treating, and correcting acne scarring. (Of note, Dr. Lam is focused principally on acne scarring rather than on managing the ongoing condition of acne, which a dermatologist would be better equipped to address.)

TCA CROSS - worth the risks?

Postby Mysteryagain » Wed Oct 29, 2008 10:32 am

Hi Doctor. I have seen your videos on the matter and understand how and why TCA CROSS works for scars (well, I think I do). What I wonder about is the cost versus the benefit of having it done, since YOU are experienced on it but in the hands of other doctors (and yes, even specialists), badly applied, those concentrations of TCA could create more trouble than solutions.

I know each person is different, but would you say that in experienced hands, TCA CROSS shields visible results? as in ... real improvements worth the risk of having a doc other than you (who already have a large experience with it) close to your face with such an acid?

Are there areas of the face (thickness of the skin, etc.) where it tends to have better results, and so be a bit more worth the risks involved? Say, would the nose (where the skin seems to be thicker...maybe I am wrong!) probably be less dangerous and benefit more from being treated?

Hugs!

In general, always have someone experienced with a particular technique work with your face. There is an inherent danger with someone who is doing this for the first time. Unfortunately, the CROSS technique is far from perfect. It only yields 50 to 70% improvement in SELECT TYPES of acne scarring, namely the tiny ice picks. It is terrible and inappropriate for big rolling volume loss or even moderate sized holes. The holes should be like a pin hole size if not slightly bigger. The nose is relatively safe but anywhere can be dangerous with these high concentrations of acid in inexperienced hands.
best,
