Gummy smiles

This section of the forum is dedicated to discussions on various surgical techniques for facial rejuvenation, including fat transfer/fat grafting, browlift, blepharoplasty (cosmetic eyelid surgery), facelift, etc. Also, this category includes questions on hand rejuvenation via fat grafting. (Of note, Dr. Lam does not perform body rejuvenation except for hand fat grafting)

Gummy smiles

Postby Mysteryagain » Mon Oct 27, 2008 8:59 am

Hi Doctor.
First of all, thank you for the past blog entries. All have been very inspiring and given good food for thought. I have sent the link to many acquaintances, they are really worth reading.

A short question... short of small doses of botox, is there anything to be done for gummy smiles that is more permanent or semi-permanent? In my case, I have an "gummy" smile but no teeth-mouth-maxillary issues. Just show too much gum and so far I have "solved" it with botox but since the muscles involved are so often used, I see that, there, the botox wears off quite fast. It gets quite tiring and expensive (the latter is the main problem ;) ) to get botox injections for that often.

Have I other option or just... get used to my gummy smile being there, OR save always for botox there?

Hugs!!!

thanks for the compliment on my blogs. the only other thing that i can offer if you have it is a premaxillary implant to bring down the premaxilla. the problem with these is that if you do a wide based one it can feel unnatural. i used to put a silicone block in there but now i only used diced cartilage into the central portion. it is not quite as effective but i don't want to bother one's smile. the premaxilla if that is not obvious is the piece of bone between the upper lip and nose between the central incisor teeth. for trivia's sake, it is also known as Goethe's bone.
best,
sml
