Blindness caused by fillers

Postby lucillenyc » Wed Oct 01, 2008 1:42 am

Hi again, Dr. Lam,
I've been doing research on fillers and discovered that fillers can lead to blindness if they are accidentally injected into a retinal artery. I found this extremely scary!

I was wondering how concerned I should be about this risk? Are certain areas of the face more risky than others?

I appreciate the fact that you inject Restylane around the eyes with a cannula instead of a needle. You seem to be more concerned about safety than many other practitioners.

don't scare everyone. i think when you do advanced procedures around the eyes, you do need to go to someone experienced. needles around the eyes are generally safe. i always draw back when i use a needle to make sure that there are no arterial issues. as you know i also use cannulas around the eyes. but i think an experienced injector working around the eyes is okay with needles. i want to be careful not to condemn a method. just make sure you work with an experienced injector who stays safe.

the reason for the last forum response is that the area between the eyes is the riskiest. even though very rarely risky, safe techniques with amount and depth of injection and preparing the patient for possible risks is important. and also having everything on hand for a problem will help steer a patient through safety.
best,
sml
