Hitting a blood vessel with filler injections

Postby lucillenyc » Wed Oct 01, 2008 1:31 am

Hi Dr. Lam,
I recently had Juvederm injections in my cheeks. While the results are beautiful, my injector hit a blood vessel and I had a huge black eye for 2 weeks. I now have some scar tissue under my eye from where the swelling was.

I'd like to get a touch up, but I am very, very nervous. I would like to know if there is any way to minimize the risk of hitting a blood vessel?

Also, I am interested in traveling to Dallas for fillers with you. Is it necessary to schedule a consultation beforehand?

Thanks for your help,
Lucille

i am sorry to hear that. your doc probably does not know about laser treatments. whenever i see a bruise that resides an inch outside of the eyelid, i knock down the bruise almost entirely within 48 hours (i.e., after the bruise matures in 5 to 7 days). i always pre-ice the area and that helps cut down bruising a lot. Avoiding aspirin products can also help for 7 days prior including abstaining from fish oil, vitamin E etc. i am equivocal when it comes to arnica but i do give it out to some patients who desire it. the scar tissue is most likely a resolving hematoma. by using cannulas, i see far less bruising and also when i use a needle i see far less bruising because i don't stick someone 50 times. however, i still can get bruising. there is no guarantee.

as far as coming to see me, yes, in general you can come down here and do a consult and in-office treatment at the same time. obviously, i am always honest with you when i see you and make sure that i do the procedure only if i think it would benefit you. besides that, i would be happy to see you and to take care of you.
best,
sml
