African-American with acne scars

This section of the forum is dedicated to discussions on managing, treating, and correcting acne scarring. (Of note, Dr. Lam is focused principally on acne scarring rather than on managing the ongoing condition of acne, which a dermatologist would be better equipped to address.)

African-American with acne scars

Postby amynphill » Tue Dec 04, 2007 2:54 pm

Hello Dr. Lam,

I saw article on your practice in the Dallas Inform magazine. I have had moderate acne since I can remember. I was on Accutane about 5 years ago and it has since improved. I am currently just using Retin-A. I am inquiring about a few options - 1:) to improve my acne 2:) and most importantly the scaring from the acne and enlarged pores. I have researched and researched and all the information I have read is that African-Americans must be very careful when using laser treatments of any kind as it can severely discolor the skin permanently.

I am inquiring to see if you have any experience with African-Americans as it relates to improving acne using your laser treatments and the scaring as well. If so I would like to set-up a consultation to discuss. I know it is a little to give feedback via email on the best recommendation, but if you have knowledge on how you have prevented clients with darker pigmentation from discoloration during your laser treatments I would love to hear back.

Thanks,
Amy

In general, lasers are not really good for African skin. If you have larger rolling pits, silicone correction can be very effective and safe in African skin types. I would need to see you in consultation to make that decision. I am booked out a couple of months in advance so please plan ahead. I hope that helps a bit.
Best,
SML
