Hi Dr. Lam,
I enjoy reading your forum. I had a mole removed from the left side of my nostril last year in April. It was a moderately sized mole and I had it removed because it was occasionally bothering me in the sun, but mostly because it was unsightly. I've had moles removed in the past (when I was young, via freezing) without any issues or major/minor scarring.
I got a recommendation for a plastic surgeon from a great dermatologist in town but likely should've done more research on the doctor's background, experience with the nose, and / or got a second opinion.
Instead of a excision, the doctor recommended taking it out via surgery with a small scar. (At this time, I didn't realize that unless done properly the nose can be an unsightly place for scars.) What occurred was the stitches ripped leaving a mole-sized hole in the left side of my nose. I likely should've gone to see a better plastic surgeon at this point, but I returned to the previous surgeon and his recommendation was to make another incision along both sides of the hole and sew it up. In retrospect, this seems like an even more dangerous and precarious surgery. This took place in October 2012.
What I'm left with now is a 1/2 inch scar for a very small mole. (May-June 2013) The scar runs linearly up the nostril. It has a very small, small dip, but for the most part is flat and slightly depressed. You have to run your finger over it quite a bit to feel this depression.
I've used a mix of salycilic acid peels (in small contained intervals), Mederma, a dermaroller, and scar guard at night. I've been very careful with all of these and have seen improvement, taking the scar from horrific to just terrible. Despite this, I'm still not comfortable with how it looks. I went from a very small mole to a very large scar across my nose.
Do you have any thoughts on treatment I should pursue and when? I can share pictures with you via private message if that's possible.
