i wish i knew but i have no idea. there are probably two theories. the heat of the laser causing the loss or the blood supply being compromised. i really wish i could elaborate but this is outside my sphere of knowledge.

Dr Lam. Sorry to interject, but I have been following this discussion closely. I have considered getting IPL myself, but after reading alot of these horror stories FORGET IT. I appreciate that you are answering these questions as honestly as you can, which is more than I can say for most doctors who dont even want to seem to acknowledge the problem. I know whats happening is probably pretty rare, BUT PEOPLES FACES ARE CAVING IN as a result of IPL. Shouldn't some sort of official inquiry on the matter take place here? When and how will that take place? This sounds like something out of a bad horror film.

i appreciate the question and the concern. i use IPL and lasers in my office. the IPL i use and purchased does not have the strong energy power as some laser models, and i have simply never seen the problem. i use a KTP every week for bruising and had not problems. i think the very strong ipl laser models have been principally implicated in this issue. i think education about ipl injury is very important but at the same time not create a panic. i don't know what the right answer is.
