Hello Dr. Lam,
Hope you're doing well!
My 15 yr old daughter had a mole removed from her chest by a plastic surgeon specializing in pediatric mole removal. He thought it would be a small white line after healing. However, it was not a good outcome and she has a noticeable widened hypertrophic scar on her upper chest. Of course she is self-conscious about it so I thought I'd begin checking into recommendations by qualified physicians.
It's been about 10 months, and the original plastic surgeon has seen us at 1 week post, 5 weeks post, and last month. He would be happy to do a scar revision, but I'm not sure the same approach won't make it just worse. He does not recommend silicone sheets or gels, and he thought a steroid injection would possible flatten or might leave a sunken depression.
I have thought of maybe 5FU injections to help flatten it, and something to address the redness might help, too. But would you suggest surgery again to excise? It seems to me the direction of pull on the scar widened it, and perhaps a left to right cut might have been better to minimize the widening?
